9th Biennial Emergy Research Conference

Conference Schedule

Pre-conference workshop
Emergy Characterization Factors & the EPA emergy database
Wednesday, January 6, Phelps Lab 101, 1:00-3:00pm

Chris De Vilbiss, Cissy Ma, Wes Ingwersen, and Mark Brown

This free workshop will introduce the EPA emergy database that can be included in LCA evaluations. The workshop will cover the methods employed to compute Emergy Characterization Factors ( EmCFs) for many elementary inputs to the technosphere. Elementary flows are flows from nature. EmCFs are the name in LCA literature for UEVs. This EmCF library when included in LCA software is designed to calculate emergy values from the ground up following consistent rules and assumptions. The EXCEL database of EmCFs is designed as an interconnection database, built so that any changes/updates in the future will automatically propagate through all the elementary flows. The ECF library will provide a consensus set of emergy values for LCA and various other analyses. The database will be demonstrated using OpenLCA and a version of the database will be available in OpenLCA format.
